William Thacker's flatmate, Spike, is the only UK character who is not English, to be more precise the only character with a non-RP accent. When he is introduced he is shown to be lousy, with no sense in how to be with women. This is a binary opposotion to the well-mannered and middle-class character of Thacker (reference to classic writer Thackeray?). Spike often acts as a plot device to harden William's romance with Anne (sitting on Thacker's glasses meaning he has to wear ludicrious underwater goggles and accidentally letting the whole press know about Anne hiding). The fact that he has been given a Welsh nationality represents this country as ill-mannered idiots without malicious intent but with little intelligence and no sexual decorum). (similarities to Welsh character in My Family?). For example William's colleague in the travel bookshop is shown to be a normal, polite person, nothing special as a personality, but still does nothing to make Thacker's life harder. However, Spike does get a happy ending with an unexpected marriage with William's sister, and ironically William's RP-accented colleague is the one character left with no hint at all at a potential romantic interest. If portaying this Welsh character as the weird, different idiot had been taken further he would most likely have ended as the only character to not find love. He also is the character who helps to make William realize he should enter a relationship with Anne despite his doubts, and also stereotypically saves the day by making sure they get through traffic.
An Asian is also used for comic effect towards the end.
